On the Garden State Parkway there is a water tower that says "Union" in big letters on it. My grandfather leaned over to my dad one day as they were driving along and said "You know, I've always wanted to get up there somehow and paint over the top of the U".....making it "Onion"

my grandfather was in the monument/gravestone business. the pastor who presided over the services for his funeral met him at the local cemetery one day, and he said to him "you know pastor, we have very similar jobs. The only difference, is you send them up, and I send them down".

RIP--your humor, integrity, and love will be greatly missed, but always remembered.

last night was quite possibly one of the best nights. i have missed everyone here in stratford so much and finally getting to see everyone and catch up and just having an overall great time was so nice. thank you all so much :). being away at school is hard because you find yourself disconnected from people, and you feel like when you come home the family you once had won't be the same anymore....but last night proved to me that that's not true. i love you all so much.

my family and i just sat down to lunch, and i offhand made a comment about the view we have from our kitchen window. our kitchen looks directly out over the Housatonic, and on days like today the deep blue of the river with the bright green of the grass and the trees all bare so you can see right through them...its almost perfect. my dad made a comment about how he found this place by accident. my parents had been looking to move out of Monroe because at the last PPT my dad had confronted the director of special education and asked him point blank "will you ever consider outplacing her" and he said "no". so they began looking for houses, but couldnt let the people in Monroe know they were moving until after they had already copied all of my sisters school records to ship to Foundation School. A week after they saw the house my parents made an offer. but before they made anything final, my dad had to go to the neighborhood association of Founders Way to plead with them to allow us to put in as inconspicuous a fence as possible (my parents couldn't buy a house and not have a fence with a daughter who was prone to escapes). they approved the fence, the fence we still have to this day actually. we moved in the spring before i started kindergarten, after a series of morgages and agreements. and that is how i ended up here, in stratford. i've lived here for 15 years. this house isnt just a house, and the people here arent just schoolmates or friends. this is my home, and everyone here is my family.

merry christmas, happy holidays. i love you.

there are days when i wish that i could be gently prosaic like Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail. I love that movie, and I just think that Meg Ryan is the epitome of casual intelligent elegance. Or at least her character in this movie is. She cares about something--she is passionate about childrens books. Yesterday when I took little Freddy (the 14 month old that I babysit for) to the library, I was overwhelmed by how amazing children's books are. How inspiring they are to young minds, and how you really are what you read. I can already tell that Little Freddy is going to grow up with a sincere love of dogs and of books, because he picked out all of the books with dogs in them and at one point was so overtaken with the joy of his surroundings that he just ran around the room shouting "BOOKS! BOOKS!" in the most gleefull voice I have ever heard him use. Children are so innocent and sweet. Now that Freddy and I have had a summer apart, he's closer to me than ever. He hugs me and wants to cuddle with me, whereas before he only wanted to grab my leg and drool on it. He now imitates me. The other day we both sat on the couch in his apartment eating apples. The first time little freddy had an apple was with me last spring. I was eating a whole apple and was kneeling on the floor, and he came up to me, pointed to my apple, and then put his little mouth around it and with all of the might he could muster, forced his little teeth down and into the apple. We must have sat in that same position for about 25 minutes--me holding the apple out and kneeling on the floor, and him standing, using my arm for support, and munching on his first whole apple. Yesterday, we sat on the couch eating apples together. He sat next to me, because he's a big boy now and big boys don't need babysitter's laps when they aren't sad or cuddly, and he just looked up at me and smiled. It was just the perfect moment in my day. All of my friends have more relevant jobs: one of my roommates worked at the State Department this summer, others had internships on the Hill or at law offices and such, but in all honesty, I wouldn't trade jobs with any one of them. The time that I spend with Freddy is precious, in addition to the fact that its $12/hour. It doesn't even feel like work to me.

I'm going to go cook and watch You've Got Mail. My favorite part of that movie is....well, wouldn't you know. I don't have a favorite. I love the whole thing to pieces.
